On August 3 2011, Dr. Joy Rice received the Denmark/Reuder Award for Outstanding International Contributions to the Psychology of Women and Gender at the annual meeting of the American Psychology Association in Washington, DC. The international award honors Rice for accomplishments in her four decade career focused on women and their issues and concerns nationally and globally. Her major work, publications and advocacy have been in the areas of marital and family studies, gender and cross-cultural issues in therapy, and the effects of poverty, violence and divorce on women around the world.
Rice is also the recipient of the Educational Press Association Distinguished Achievement Award and in 2008 was honored with the Woman of the Year Award from the American Psychological Association, Section for the Advancement of Women in Counseling Psychology. Her most recent work was writing the lead chapter on "International Perspectives on Women and Mental Health" in the 2010 Handbook of Feminism and Women's Rights Worldwide.
Rice is an emerita professor at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and practices at Psychiatric Services in Madison. Joy is immediate Past President of TEMPO® International and also served on the TI Board for six years and on the TI Foundation Board where she began the TIF global microlending initiative for women entrepreneurs in need. Active in community service, Joy is current Board President of Family Services Madison. Now partially retired, she immensely enjoys her two new granddaughters, international travel, gardening an acre, and oil painting in her home studio.
